Freeride into the active Mutnovsky volcano is a truly unforgettable experience!
Landing in the southernmost airport of Kamchatka for helicopter tanking. Flight to the Shumshu Island – the place of the famous Kuril Islands Landing Operation.
There is an abandoned Japanese airdrome located in the Shumshu Island, and traces of the past events of the year 1945 can be still seen everywhere. There are a lot of military fortifications there: pillboxes, earth-and-timber emplacements, trenches, antitank ditches, storage facilities abandoned by the Japanese Army. Parts of tanks and various airplanes, as well as aircraft bombs, shells and cartridges are scattered all around the island which is all pitted with shell craters.
On our way there we will fly around active volcanoes Chikurachka (1,816 m) and Fussa (1,772 m) located on the Paramushir Island.
There are active volcanoes on the island situated inside the calderas of the more ancient volcanoes: Krenitsyn volcano (1,324 m) within the Tao-Rusyr caldera in the south and Nemo (1,019 m) in the north.
Krenitsyn volcano is the largest volcano-in-volcano on Earth. It is surrounded by the waters of the deepest fresh-water lake on the Russian islands. The maximum depth recorded by the Russian researchers is 264 meters. Diameter of gigantic caldera bowl is over 7 kilometers, its walls are as high as 500 meters above the lake.
Alaid volcano is an active volcano in the Atlasov Island of the Greater Kuril Ridge, the northernmost and highest volcano in the Kuril Islands.
On the way there you can land on the island opposite Fussu and Chikurachki volcanoes to enjoy spectacular view of them.
Our route runs across Mutnovskoye plateau with its spectacular views of southern Kamchatka most active volcanoes.
The route starts from Verkhne-Paratunskaya valley, and then we climb to the mountain pass and go down to the huge mountain plateau which we cross to reach the Mutnovsky volcano (2,322 m). Here we will see an impressively-sized ravine Opasny. After that we will go round the volcano from the south and start riding down to the valley of the Russkaya river, which will lead us to the coast of the same-name bay.
A comfortable motorboat will wait for us at the site and will take us to our sea-voyage.
Sea king is the largest of eared seals. The German biologist G. Steller who first described it called it a sea lion.
During our sea voyage we will fish, watch bird colonies and see the well-known Three Brothers Rocks. Also, if we are lucky enough, we may meet killer whales.
